The annual ceremony, hosted by Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV, is one of Zambia’s most significant cultural events. It celebrates the harvest season and reinforces Ngoni identity, heritage, and unity. The gathering attracted thousands of Zambians, traditional leaders, and foreign dignitaries from across the region.

Promoting Healing, Unity and Reconciliation

In line with this year’s theme, “Promoting Healing, Unity and Reconciliation,” President Hichilema stressed the importance of fostering cohesion across the country.

He noted that traditional ceremonies such as Ncwala are more than symbolic events; they are platforms that strengthen Zambia’s long-standing belief in unity in diversity. The President emphasized that national progress depends on collaboration, mutual respect, and shared purpose among citizens.

Economic Challenges and Collective Resilience

The Head of State acknowledged the economic challenges the country continues to face, particularly the impact of drought conditions on agriculture and livelihoods. He called for resilience and collective effort in overcoming these hardships.

President Hichilema highlighted the importance of investing in irrigation systems and water harvesting methods as sustainable solutions to mitigate the effects of climate variability. According to him, building agricultural resilience is critical to securing Zambia’s food systems and economic stability.

Infrastructure Development in Eastern Province

The President also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to infrastructure development, particularly in Eastern Province. He referenced ongoing and planned road projects such as Chipata–Chadiza and Katete–Chanida, stating that improved road networks are essential for trade, connectivity, and economic growth.

Infrastructure expansion, he noted, remains a key pillar of national development and inclusive economic participation.

Expanding Access to Education

Education featured prominently in the President’s address. He reiterated the importance of the free education policy, urging families to ensure that children take full advantage of the opportunity.

He described education as the foundation for equality, empowerment, and long-term national development, emphasizing that no child should be left behind.

Strengthening Government and Traditional Leadership Collaboration

President Hichilema praised traditional leaders for their role in preserving cultural heritage and maintaining community stability. He emphasized that cooperation between government and traditional institutions is vital in driving development, promoting peace, and fostering reconciliation.

By attending and actively participating in the Ncwala ceremony, the President reinforced the message that culture remains central to Zambia’s identity and governance framework.

A Ceremony Rooted in Identity and National Purpose

The Ncwala Traditional Ceremony continues to stand as a symbol of gratitude, unity, and continuity. This year’s gathering not only celebrated Ngoni heritage but also served as a reminder that cultural identity and national development can move hand in hand.

As Zambia navigates economic recovery and social transformation, the message from Chipata was clear: unity, resilience, and collaboration remain essential to building a stronger nation.
