Several Houses Flooded in Nyimba District

By Balancehub Term/BalanceHub

Several households in Ezekiel Village, located in Chief Ndake’s area of Nyimba District, have been left devastated after heavy rainfall caused the Nyimba River to burst its banks, submerging homes and destroying property.

Confirming the incident in a telephone interview with ZNBC News, Nyimba District Commissioner Paul Daka said the area received intense rainfall that led to the sudden swelling of the Nyimba River. The resulting overflow inundated nearby settlements, with almost the entire village affected.

Homes Submerged, Livelihoods Disrupted

According to Mr. Daka, the flooding caused significant damage to houses and household goods, leaving families grappling with losses of bedding, food supplies, clothing, and other essentials. Many residents were forced to seek temporary refuge with relatives or neighbors on higher ground as water levels rose rapidly.

“The heavy rains caused the Nyimba River to overflow, and this led to the flooding of several houses. The destruction is extensive, and many families have been affected,” Mr. Daka said.

Community Impact and Safety Concerns

Beyond property damage, the flooding has disrupted daily life in Ezekiel Village. Access routes have been cut off in some areas, making movement difficult and raising concerns about access to clean drinking water, health services, and sanitation. With stagnant water remaining around homesteads, residents also face increased risks of waterborne diseases.

Local authorities are assessing the situation to determine the full extent of the damage and identify immediate needs, including shelter, food assistance, and medical support.

Call for Preparedness and Support

The incident underscores the growing impact of extreme weather events during the rainy season and highlights the need for improved flood preparedness, early warning systems, and river management in flood-prone areas.

As assessments continue, authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and, where possible, relocate to safer ground during periods of heavy rainfall. Humanitarian support and coordinated response efforts will be crucial in helping affected families recover and rebuild.

Our thoughts are with the people of Ezekiel Village as they navigate the aftermath of this flooding. Continued updates will follow as more information becomes available.
