The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has successfully evacuated 54 flood victims from Kamwala area in Lumezi District, Eastern Province, following severe flooding of the Lundazi River which occurred five days ago.

The affected individuals had been stranded across the river while undertaking agricultural activities and were unable to return to their homes due to dangerously high water levels. With support from the Zambia Air Force, four aircraft trips were conducted to safely evacuate the victims and their personal belongings to Chiweza area in Kazembe Ward.

Meanwhile, the floods have rendered 127 households homeless after houses collapsed due to heavy rainfall. The displaced families are currently sheltered at Kazembe Primary School, where DMMU, working with cooperating partners, is providing food and essential non-food relief items.

Other affected families in surrounding villages, including Chimalilo, Saili, and Bodola, are being accommodated in temporary shelters within their communities.

DMMU has since commenced the distribution of relief supplies. In a commendable gesture of solidarity, a local businessman from Lundazi, Mr. Aliboo, has donated 100 bags of 25kg mealie meal to support the affected families.

Preliminary assessments show that flooding originated upstream in Lundazi District, damaging critical infrastructure. Downstream, the floods have caused the collapse of houses, destruction of crop fields, and heavy siltation, leaving farmlands buried under sand.

DMMU continues to monitor the situation closely and is working with line ministries, the Zambia Air Force, and cooperating partners to safeguard lives and restore dignity to affected communities.

If you are able to help — do not wait.

If you can assist your neighbor — do it now.

If you can donate food, clothes, building materials, or transport — act.

Let us remember: help does not always start from the top; it often starts with the person next door. Together, we can reduce suffering and restore hope to our fellow citizens.

In a heartfelt press statement issued by Hon. Makebi Zulu , the family expressed gratitude to the Government of South Africa for its support, and thanked President Cyril Ramaphosa and Minister Ronald Lamola for honouring their space to mourn in peace.
